Boron
Boron assists in the production of natural steroid compounds within the body and is needed in trace amounts for healthy bones and muscle growth. It is also necessary for the metabolism of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. The federal government's own researchers have found that a deficiency of the mineral dulls thinking and interferes with hand-eye coordination, while other research shows a decided impact on arthritis.
Taking 6 mg of boron daily for eight weeks, one study concluded, significantly improved arthritic symptoms and had a marked benefit against severe osteoarthritis.
Elderly people usually benefit from taking a supplement of 2 to 3 mg daily because they have greater problems with calcium absorption. Boron deficiency accentuates vitamin D deficiency.
According to one study, boron apparently can raise a woman's natural estrogen level just as much as does hormone replacement therapy and is an equally effective safeguard against osteoporosis.
Deficiency: Decrease in ability to concentrate, drowsiness, urinary excretion of calcium and magnesium.
Sources: Fresh fruits, apples, vegetables, carrots, grapes, dark green leafy vegetables, raw nuts, pears and whole grains.
Dosage Ranges and Duration of Administration: Boron has yet to receive an RDA from the FDA.
- 3 mg of Boron is the general recommended daily dose.
- For treatment of menopausal symptoms as well as arthritis, 6-18 mg per day.
