Barberry has been used for the treatment of diarrhea and intestinal infections.

Contains an alkaloid, berberine, which is also found in other medicinal herbs such as goldenseal and Oregon grape. The therapeutic effects of barberry are attributed to its berberine content.

Studies have found that berberine contains properties effective against a wide variety of bacteria, viruses, and fungus; and that berberine was effective in treating some bacteria. Other studies have found that barberry can kill microoganisms such as Staphylococci, Streptococci, Salmonella, Giardia, Lamblia, Escherichia coli, Shigella, and Candida Albicans.

Barberry is used for liver problems, kidney problems, coughs, cholera, diarrhea, fever, inflammation, hypertension and tumors. It is also recommended to increase bile secretions and stimulate the appetite. Barberry may also help in cases of anemia and malnutrition. It stimulates bile production and dilates blood vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure.

  • Helps to strengthen the body and is a system-invigorator
  • Works to increase bowel functions; thus stimulating appetite and promoting bile secretion.
  • Exhibits superior stimulatory effects when used with cayenne.
  • Works to heal sore throats when used as a gargle and mouthwash.
  • Barberry will reduce inflammation of the spleen caused by irritation due to contaminated blood and is effective at loosening obstructions in the intestinal tract.eywo
