Traditionally elecampane has been used to treat chest congestion and bronchial cough. It helps to expel mucus and control excessive coughing and chest congestion. It aids in controlling inflammation in the respiratory tract and sooth the tissue. Herbalists recommend the use for respiratory ailments.

Elecampane has been found, through clinical experiments, to contain a powerful antiseptic and bactericide which is particularly effective against tuberculosis.
