Eucalyptus is a germicide with antiseptic and astringent properties. The oil has various abilities. It can be sniffed to clear sinus congestion; a few drops in a humidifier may help chest congestion; mixed with water for an insect repellant, and a small drop on the tongue to relieve nausea.
The leaves of the eucalyptus contain eucalyptol, which has been studied for its healing value. One study involving laboratory animals showed that eucalyptol was effective in killing influenza and some bacteria.
Antibacterial properties may help prevent infection when applied to wounds.
