Flaxseed has many medicinal properties. The oil has been used as a remedy for colds, coughs and as an expectorant. It is soothing on the mucous membranes. It has also been used to treat asthmatic conditions. Flaxseed is a mild, natural laxative. Because it adds fiber to the body it can help when constipation is a problem. It is also healing on the stomach and intestines. Flaxseed can be helpful in the treatment of gastritis, ulcers, and heartburn.
Flaxseed aids in reducing the clotting tendency of the blood which may lower the risk of heart attacks and stroke, as well as reducing cholesterol levels.
Unrefined cold-pressed flax oil is rich in omega-3 oil, an essential fatty acid (EFA). EFA's are useful in balancing the hormones in the body and aiding in the weight loss process. A lower risk of breast cancer in women was found in a study by the National Cancer Institute when high levels of lignan were found in the blood.
Cancer researchers have found that adding omega-3 oils such as flaxseed to the cancer treatment program helped to dissolve tumors faster.
Another study found that flaxseed mucilage extracted and given to diabetics can improve their glucose metabolism 28%.
