The active component in Garcinia is (-) hydroxycitric acids or HCA. It is similar to citric acid found in fruits such as oranges, lemons and grapefruit. The Garcinia fruit is approximately 50% HCA.

Hydroxycitric acid seems to have potent fat fighting properties. It is known to block the formations of fatty tissue resulting in less storage of fat.
