Ginseng has often been referred to as an adaptogen herb. Adaptogens help to produce adjustments as needed in the body. Ginseng is an adaptogen that helps normalize blood pressure, whether high or low. It helps to increase or slow output to restore equilibrium.
In addition, adaptogens help modify the effects of environmental and internal stresses from different forms such as chemical pollutants, radiation, some poisons, weather, temperature changes, poor diet, exercise, and emotional stress.
It helps normalize and adjust the body restoring and regulating natural immune response.
Hypoglycemic activity has been reported from studies conducted, which may be beneficial for diabetics. Ginseng increases serum cortisol levels in non-diabetics, yet it reduces the levels in diabetics.
Ginseng has actually been found to prevent damage to the cells from radiation. When damage does occur from radiation exposure, it is thought to speed the healing process.
Siberian ginseng (eleutherococcus senticosus), grown in Russia, is not considered to be a "true ginseng," though scientists have reported common pharmaclogical features to the panax (the genus name for ginseng).
