Goldenseal has been used traditionally for many different conditions such as boosting the glandular system, hormone imbalance, congestion, inflammation, female problems, infections, bronchitis, menstrual problems, catarrh of the bladder, gastritis, ulcers, bowel stimulation, antiseptic and as an immune system builder. Goldenseal has been used as an insect repellent and as a pesticide for crops. It can be boiled in water and used externally for skin conditions.
It is beneficial against viruses and infections. It contains the alkaloids, hydrastine and hydrastinine that have strong astringent and antiseptic benefits on the mucous membranes.
Goldenseal can help relieve diarrhea in cases of giardiasis, amebiasis or other gastrointestinal infections.
The antibiotic properties of goldenseal are due to the alkaloid content including berberine which has been found to be affective against organisms such as staphylococcus, streptococcus, chlamydia, salmonella, diplococcus pnuemonia and candida albicans.
