Hops is best known for its sedative action. Its main uses are to alleviate nervous tension and promote a restful sleep. It is also used for its antibiotic properties, which are beneficial for toothaches, earaches, sore throats, bronchitis, infections, high fevers, delirium and pain. A poultice of hops can be used for inflammation, boils, tumors, and swelling.
Hops has also been used as a stimulant to the glands and muscles of the stomach and also as a relaxant on the gastric nerves.
Hops has a relaxing effect on the liver and gall duct and a laxative effect on the bowels.
