Wild Yam relaxes the muscular fiber, sooths the nerves and relieves pain, especially in the uterus. It is often used to balance hormones, to treat nausea in pregnant woman, and to aid in preventing miscarriages, cramps, and general pains during pregnancy.
Wild yam contains a component known as diosgenin, which is a precursor of progesterone. It has the ability to convert progesterone but does not contain progesterone. Wild yam can be taken in capsule form or applied in cream form. It has been known to reduce symptoms of menopause and may be more effective for treating osteoporosis than estrogen.
