Dimethylglycine (DMG) is a derivative of the amino acid glycine. It acts as a building block for many important substances, including the amino acid methionine, choline, DNA, and a number of important hormones and neurotransmitters.

DMG can provide an ideal pick-me-up or an energy booster that lasts for most of the day. DMG is a methyl donor, which the body uses to add a single extra carbon cluster, thus converting one chemical into another, neutralizing toxins, and protecting genes.

According to one study, DMG quadrupled the immune responses of people who took 120 mg daily for ten weeks. The research concluded that DMG strengthens the body's defenses on a cellular and hormonal level and also helps cells to use oxygen more effectively.

Bernard Rimland, Ph.D., presents case reports showing that DMG can lengthen autistic children's attention spans, brighten their moods, and reduce their tantrums and their obsessive-compulsive behavior.

Gary Price Todd, M.D., a leading nutritional ophthamologist, has reported that daily 250 mg doses of DMG reversed early cataract growth in some of his patients.

Animal studies suggest that DMG may reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures. Although clinical trials have failed to find a benefit to people, doctors' case reports have shown the number of seizures dropped significantly when people with epilepsy took 180 mg of DMG daily. When they stopped the supplement, they experienced considerably more seizures.

One experiment concluded that taking 5 mg of DMG per day enables an athlete to exercise longer before becoming exhausted. This is not to be confused with studies on pangamic acid which showed improved athletic endurance by preventing a buildup of lactic acid in the body. Studies are still underway to determine if DMG will show the same benefit.

Sources: Pure DMG tablet containing 125 mg each are the only form of the supplement available.
