GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid)

  • Anxiety
  • Convulsions
  • Depression
  • Attention Deficit
  • Epilepsy
  • Memory/Stroke

Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (GABA) is an amino acid that acts as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. GABA is a nutritional tranquilizer that some people need to control seizures or rise above depressive feelings.

Valium and other drugs in the benzodiazepene family have been used by around 15 percent of all Americans. They induce the same changes in brain chemistry that GABA performs. GABA acts as a natural relaxant and tranquilizer that won't knock you out.

Depression seems to be associated with a low GABA level. Women whose hormonal changes caused depressive feelings, one study found, had significantly lower GABA measurements compared with women whose moods were unaffected by menstrual changes. The use of GABA helps to alleviate these depressed feelings.

GABA has been shown to be useful in seizure control. Seizure disorders in children frequently coincide with a low GABA level. Taurine's seizure-controlling ability probably stems from its ability to raise GABA levels in the brain.

Restoring memory loss and speech in individuals who have suffered a stroke may be helped by 2 grams of GABA per day. The same amount has been found to decrease high blood sugar, while a daily 3 gram dose appeared to reduce blood pressure and bolster overall heart function.

GABA has been used in the treatment of epilepsy and hypertension. It is also useful for enlarged prostate, due to its role in the mechanism regulating the release of sex hormones.

GABA is used as a treatment for attention deficit disorder and may reduce cravings for alcohol.

Deficiency: anxiety, depression, convulsions, premenstrual syndrome, hormonal changes.

Depleting Agents: Exposure to estrogens, free radicals, salicylates, or food additives can affect our internal supply of GABA. A low-protein diet can also hinder production, as can an insufficient amount of zinc or vitamin B6, both of which help the body to make the nutrient.

Precautions: Too much GABA can cause increased anxiety, shortness of breath, numbness around the mouth, and tingling in the extremities. Further, abnormal levels of GABA unbalance the brain's message-delivery system and may cause seizures.

Dosage Ranges and Duration of Administration:

  • For anxiety and irritability a dosage anywhere between 500 mg and 4 grams daily.
  • For seizure disorders or clinical depression consult your doctor.
