Silicon (Silica)

  • Collagen
  • Connective tissue
  • Nails/skin/hair
  • Alzheimer's
  • Osteoporosis
  • Flexible arteries

Silicon is the second most abundant element on the planet (oxygen being the first). It is necessary for the formation of collagen for bones and connective tissue, for healthy nails, skin and hair, and for calcium absorption in the early stages of bone formation.

Silicon is most commonly found in the form of Silica, a compound of silicon and oxygen (silicon dioxide).

In certain mammals, silicon affects a variety of substances necessary for healthy development of bones, blood vessels, and the brain, including collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans.

Silicon specifically helps animals develop better cartilage. Lab animals deficient in silicon develop joint abnormalities, and people, some research suggests, may lose bone density.

Silicon is needed to maintain flexible arteries, and therefore plays an important role in preventing cardiovascular disease. In areas where silicon concentration is higher in the water supply, epidemiologists have noted that fewer cases of arteriosclerosis exist.

A Silicon deficiency may contribute to high blood pressure and eschemic heart disease.

New research suggests that silicon effects the absorption of aluminum, which might influence the risk of Alzheimer's disease. When the silicon level in the soil is low, the aluminum concentration is frequently high, and some studies suggest that the same association may exist in the brain.

Silicon stimulates the immune system and inhibits the aging process in tissues. Silicon levels decrease with aging, so elderly people need larger amounts.

Deficiency: Bone deformities; connective tissue disorders; muscle cramps; irritability; insomnia

Sources: Apples, beets, bell peppers, unrefined grains, legumes, soy beans, and root vegetables

Herb Sources: Alfalfa, horsetail.

Dosage Ranges and Duration of Administration: There are no U.S. RDA standards established.

A typical diet provides about 30 mg of silicon per day. As insurance against the loss of bone density, Dr. Atkins recommends a supplement of 2 mg daily. An extract high in silicon is horsetail and can be found in most health food stores.
