DIM is an indole phytonutrient (plant nutrient) found only in cruciferous
vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. When any cruciferous
vegetable is chewed, the plant enzymes are released; and once the enzymes
are exposed to stomach acid, a compound called indole-3 carbinol is formed,
which in turn yields DIM. DIM has a direct effect on the hormone
estrogen and how it is metabolized. Excessive or prolonged exposure
to estrogen is associated with serious health problems. Women with
higher levels of estrogen circulating in their blood streams have a higher
incidence of breast cancer.
So eating more broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables is a good preventative
measure against cancer, but many people find that taking a supplement
