Unique Lignans wage war on breast cancer
You’ve heard it a million times before…"The American Cancer Society
reports one in eight women will contract breast cancer."

With statistics like that the choice to try some preventative medicine
should be at the top of your list. One tablespoon of lignan-rich flax seed
oil contains flax particulate which deliver powerful cancer fighting precursors.

Once consumed, lignans found in flaxseed are converted in the colon, to
mammalian lignans. These lignans bind with estrogen receptors with results
suggesting they may induce the production of a special sex hormone
binding compound (SHBG). This special hormone regulates estrogen
levels and escorts excess estrogen from the body.

The short story is that the reduction of excess estrogen means less
chances of certain cancers — voila! — cancer prevention and the
prevention of metastasis of already present cancerous tumors.

One tablespoon of lignan rich flax oil per day gives new meaning to
"an ounce of prevention…"

My cholesterol is normal but my C-reactive protein is off the charts!
What does all that mean? If you are forty years or older, insist that
your doctor prescribe a C-reactive protein test for you the next time you
have your cholesterol measured. C-reactive protein is an inflammatory
marker in the blood whose measurements yield better diagnosis for
potential heart disease than the typical tests for measuring cholesterol.

25-35 million Americans have total cholesterol within normal range but
above average levels of inflammation within their cardiovascular systems.
This inflammation has significant impact on the risk of heart disease.

One of the best ways to control inflammation is to take fish oil
supplements daily. Fish oil supplements should contain both DHA
(docosahexaeonoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). A recent
study found that three grams of fish oil per day was heart-protective.

P.S. My Brain Needs a Boost
Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid that is found in all cells
but is especially concentrated in high amounts in the membranes of
brain cells.

PS makes up about 70% of the brains nerve tissue mass. The brain
produces it but aging slows the production to sub-optimal levels.

Studies have shown that supplementation with PS can slow and may
even reverse the decline of learning, mood, memory, concentration and
word recall related to dementia or age-related cognitive impairment…

Tea is not just for the bridge club
Green tea extract may improve muscle health by diminishing or
delaying tissue death. A study examined whether green tea could
reduce muscle tissue death in mice with muscular dystrophy (MS).
Young mice were fed a diet for four weeks supplemented with 0.01%
or 0.05% green tea extract. The lower dose that was tested is equal
to about seven cups of green tea/day in humans). The results showed
that green tea significantly and dose-dependently reduced cell death
in the fat-twitch long-leg muscle. There was no effect on the slow-twitch
calf muscle. Free radical stress was also concentration-dependently
decreased. Thus, green tea extract is a potent antioxidant that may
improve muscle health by protecting tissue from free radical-induced
cell death.

Calcium and weight loss
A high calcium diet may accelerate the rate of fat loss in those who
are overweight. Calcium plays a major role in energy metabolism.
In response to low-calcium diets, there is an increased release of
vitamin D, which stimulates the calcium to flow into fat cells, causing
fat gain. Mice respond to low calcium diets with accelerated weight gain.
When dietary calcium is increased, vitamin D levels are suppressed.
Calcium increases the breakdown of fat and maintains heat production
during over-consumption on a high calorie diet. There is a highly
significant reduction in the odds of being obese associated with
increasing dietary calcium intake. Dairy sources of calcium exert
a strong anti-obesity effect on fat metabolism due to the effect of other
biological compounds, indicating a role for dairy products in the control
of obesity. Thus, controlling the amount of calcium may be a viable way
of preventing and managing obesity in humans. [Journal of the American
College of Nutrition, 2002. Vol 21, Iss 2, pp 146S-151S.]
