Can you remember Curcumin? …The herb that fights Alzheimer’s
Inflammation, viruses and overactive immune function are now seriously considered instigators of Alzheimer’s disease. Fifty percent of people over 85 are afflicted with the disease and ten percent of seniors over the age of 65. Pay attention baby boomers – 65 is just around the proverbial corner. If inflammation of the brain is one of the factors that induce destruction of neurons; leading to Alzheimer’s then, ergo, anti-inflammatory agents which can cross the blood-brain barrier are exactly what we are looking for.

Curcumin (otherwise known as Turmeric), a curry spice, in both small and large doses, have been found to reduce brain inflammation. Vitamins C, E, beta carotene as well as a general multi-vitamin with minerals may be your protective blanket against the dreaded disease.

Again, baby boomers, pay attention now – that 10% is bound to rise as the number of persons reaching seniority soars. Do the math, and while you’re at it spice up your life with a bit of curcumin.

Bone up on tomatoes?
Women have been getting the lecture for years now about bone loss and osteoporosis. Whether calcium or medications have been your bone strengthening guru, the lowly tomato is about to take a front row seat. Yes, I said tomato.

Preliminary results of some new studies show that lycopene (tomato), in combination with a low concentration of vitamin D (also needed for calcium uptake); induce the synthesis of well-established markers for bone formation.
This study shows that women in particular benefit from the consumption of lycopene and other tomato phytonutrients, phytotene, phytofluene, tocopherols and phytosterols.

These components help reduce the oxidative stress and damage that leads to heart disease, hypertension, various cancers and osteoporosis.

If you are not consuming 6-7 servings of processed (not raw) tomato’s weekly, consider supplemental lycopene.

Choosing the Right Vitamin E
If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me which vitamin E was better I would be retired right now. Should I take the alpha tocopherol or the mixed tocopherols?

In actuality we need to break this down into one more level, tocopherols and tocotrenols. Researchers and cardiologists have shown and recommended, respectively, Vitamin E for its antioxidant benefits. There are new studies every week so let’s go with the current information as we know it.

It is now believed that more than one type of Vitamin E should be a part of your long-term nutritional program. That is, Vitamin E tocopherol, Vitamin E tocotrenol, Currently Vitamin E products contain either Vitamin E alpha tocopherols or Vitamin E mixed tocopherols (which contain alpha, beta, gamma and delta tocopherols). In nature there are 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrenols; they work synergistically as a team to confer the maximum antioxidant and cardiovascular protection.

The very idea that nature would create eight fractions with only one having any value should cause one to pause – they are there for a reason. The tocopherols and tocotrenols are distinguished by their side tails. The tocopherols are fat soluble: saturated side tails; the tocotrenols are unsaturated side tails. The tocopherols found largely in vegetable oils like soy, canola, wheat germ and sunflower. The tocotrenols are found in cereal grains like oat, barley, rye and rice bran. A combination of these two (or should I say 8) is the best bet.

Sweep Away Varicose Veins with Butcher’s Broom
Ruscus aculeatus, more commonly known as Butcher’s Broom is gaining momentum in the United States health industry. Until the twentieth century, the dried plant was used as a broom throughout Europe, giving the herb its name.

Butcher’s broom is an effective treatment for varicose veins in the legs. It is also a beneficial diuretic treatment for premenstrual syndrome and fluid accumulation (edema, lymph edema).

Although this little herb is just now reaching popularity it actually was used by the ancient Greeks as a diuretic and laxative. Old medicine arrives in the new world!

When leg veins weaken, blood pools in the lower legs and does not permit return of the blood to the heart, thereby causing varicose veins. Fluid pooling in the feet and lower legs can also signal the beginnings of congestive heart failure. Butcher’s broom increases the tone in the veins, reducing venous capacity and pooling of blood in the legs, and exerts protective effects on the lining and smooth muscle of the capillaries.

The flavonoid content of this herb helps to strengthen blood vessels, reduce capillary fragility, and help maintain healthy circulation. Taking butcher’s broom in a supplemental form actually helps to tighten the veins and decrease inflammation while reducing the pain associated with varicose veins.

It has been used to treat thrombosis or blood clots, arteriosclerosis, hemorrhoids, peripheral circulation problems and to lower cholesterol.
Get your broom out and start sweeping!

The Athletic Vegetarian
Vegan and Vegetarian athletes, who consume only plant products, are facing more challenges than their meat-eating cohorts. The challenge? To consume enough amino acids to maintain muscle mass. In particular, lysine and tryptophan are found primarily in animal–based protein. Of course, one look at Jack LaLanne, Martina Navratilova or Carl Lewis [all vegetarians] and one might ask what all the buzz is about.

Unfortunately there are real consequences for ignoring amino acid needs. Long-term deficiencies can result in the body cannibalizing amino acids from its own muscle mass in order to meet the needs of more critical organs.
Most plant proteins lack one or more essential amino acids. The solution, consummation of several different proteins throughout the day. For example, lentils and rice, peanut butter and whole grain bread, or pea soup and whole grain crackers provide complete protein sources.

Soy is a high-quality plant protein providing six essential amino acids. However, it is notoriously difficult to digest and the amount of protein the body absorbs can be minimal. This is not a new concern. German holistic therapist and scientist, Hubertus Trouille, took this into consideration when he formulated his product called Almased. Specifically designed as a nutritional supplement tool for the management of body composition, Almased combines raw honey enzymes, yogurt milk powder and soy protein. The fermentation process increases soy’s digestibility and when combined with yogurt, provides and ideal ratio between amino acids.

So go ahead Vegans and Vegetarians – workout, run, compete. All hope is not lost after all! But beware, if you don’t know if you are getting enough of the 8 essential amino acids…you probably are not. !
